Free ultrasound scans available to expecting mothers at LCCC
Expecting mothers can receive a free OB ultrasound scan at Laramie County Community
College through May 8.
First-year students in LCCC’s top-tier Diagnostic Medical Sonography program gain hands-on experience performing scans in the campus lab, guided by an OBGYN-credentialed sonographer. Expectant mothers between 20 and 39 weeks of pregnancy who have already completed an anatomical survey, typically performed at around 20 weeks, are eligible to participate.
The free OB ultrasounds allow parents, family and friends to view the baby together, creating a meaningful bonding experience, said Breanna Webb, LCCC’s Sonography Program clinical coordinator. LCCC’s facilities can also accommodate more guests than most clinics or OB offices, allowing everyone to share in the special moment.
Additionally, Webb said the experience is a valuable service to the community, as it helps train students who will support families in OBGYN practices in the future.
“Our students have the opportunity to practice scanning a real, moving baby, which adds an extra challenge to OB ultrasound,” she said. “This experience allows them to face a difficult exam in the supportive environment of our lab, working alongside the instructors who have guided them throughout the past year.”
LCCC’s free OB ultrasounds are offered on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Appointments begin at 1 p.m. and last approximately one hour. A doctor’s note is required to approve the free scan.
Using advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound technology, students will attempt to capture keepsake images during each session. The quality of the images depends on the baby's position and cooperation. Volunteers will receive printed images and a USB with photos from the session, all provided by LCCC sonography students. A licensed provider will not interpret the ultrasound, and no report will be generated. This is not a substitute for official ultrasound exams performed by a medical professional.
Volunteers are welcome to return for multiple scans throughout their pregnancy.
“We would love to see you again and watch your baby grow,” Webb said.
