Choir audition preparation available at LCCC for high school students

CHEYENNE, Wyoming – The Laramie County Community College Music Department will help local high school students prepare for the 2024 Wyoming All-State Choir with workshops in October. 

Each year, a select group of students is chosen for All-State Music Honor Groups in band, orchestra and choir. Open to all students in Laramie County School Districts 1 and 2, LCCC’s Audition Preparation Workshop (only choir; not for band or orchestra) will help prepare students for their choir auditions by practicing their audition repertoire, providing helpful tips and giving them the opportunity to perform a mock audition. 

Beth Smith-Jacobs, LCCC choir instructor, said there can be an advantage in auditioning for All-State for those who can take private lessons. By providing the workshop, she said she hopes the LCCC Music Department helps more students access the help they’d receive in private lessons at convenient times and at no cost. 

As a music instructor and vocalist herself, Smith-Jacobs said she knows the value of putting in proper preparation for an audition.

“It’s extremely important, and we can give students a basic idea of what most judges look for and what’s in the rubric,” she said. 

LCCC choir students are also set to help with the auditions, which Smith-Jacobs said can be another helpful aspect of the workshops. 

“Our LCCC students will learn the music and will be singing along with the high school students, which can build confidence and shows the high school students what they can aspire to in a few years,” she said.

There are four times scheduled for Oct. 14 in Fine Arts 139 on LCCC’s Cheyenne campus, one time slot for each vocal type. The soprano workshop is set for 10-11:15 a.m.; alto is from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.; tenor from 1-2:15 p.m.; and bass from 2:30-3:45 p.m. There is no need to register before the workshops. Participants should arrive in time for the workshop they wish to attend.
