CDL Program Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer Class A or Class B CDL training?

LCCC offers CDL training for both Class A and B commercial vehicles.

How many days or weeks is the training program?

Training is broken into two parts.

In part one, students have 3 weeks to complete an approximately 18-hour online theory course, meeting the Federal theory requirements for Entry-level driver training; after which they will test for and obtain their CDL Permit.

In part two, students will attend a 3 - 5 week (depending on class shift and composition), in-person Behind-the-Wheel training class, where they will be instructed in vehicle inspection, basic control skills and driving.

How many total hours of CDL training will the student receive?

The course consists of 110–170 total hours. The hours are a mixture of online, simulator, classroom and behind-the-wheel training.

Who administers the final CDL examination?

LCCC has multiple 3rd-Party examiners on staff to administer the final practical test.

Do you provide part-time classes, full-time classes or both?

Both.

Full-time classes are offered during regular business hours: Mon-Fri 8a-4:30p.

Part-time classes are offered evenings and weekends: Mon-Fri 5p-9p, plus Sat 8a-4:30p.  The number of total hours is the same, so completing the part time course stretches over a longer timeframe.

Do you offer classes in Laramie?

Yes, we offer CDL training in both Cheyenne and Laramie.  Evening classes are only available in Cheyenne.

Will there be any night-time driver training?

Depending on the training hours and time of year, night-time driving may be offered as either practical, hands-on training or lecture/theory.  The same is true of our inclement weather driver training.

What kind of training equipment will be used (tractor-trailers, passenger bus, dump truck, etc.)?

Training is conducted in tractor/trailer combinations with air brakes and manual 10-speed transmissions.  Students will receive no restrictions on their driver's license.  LCCC has several truck and trailer combinations, providing the opportunity for students to train in multiple tractor/trailer configurations.

Our simulator has the capability of adjusting traffic, weight, weather and traction.  We can simulate city, highway and unpaved roadways, along with various other driving scenarios/conditions.  The simulator also allows options to choose multiple tractor types and trailers of various lengths while displaying views on five screens; providing a realistic feel for the driver in a virtual setting.

Do you offer any training for other endorsements such as HAZMAT, Tankers, Double and Triples?

We offer Entry-level driver theory training (ELDT), HAZMAT endorsement, and Passenger endorsement training (in your vehicle).

Tanker and Double/Triple endorsements only require testing at Driver Services; no specialized training is offered.

Do you offer job placement assistance for those who qualify?

Yes, we maintain a list of industry partners actively looking to hire our graduates, locally, regionally and nationally.  The college also offers training in job seeking strategies, such as resume writing, and interview preparation.

Do you offer financial assistance?

Yes, we often have grants/scholarships available for qualified students.  Contact Darlene Kaelin at dkaelinFREELARAMIE or 307.778.4381 for information.

What kind of certificate/diploma will the student receive once the CDL training is completed?

The student receives a certificate of completion and transcript from the CDL program at LCCC.  Upon successful completion of the CDL practical test, a CDL license will be issued by the State of Wyoming.
