Dynamics of realism explored in LCCC art exhibition

Artwork of a cityscape by Andrew WoodwardCHEYENNE, Wyoming – Exploring the subtle balance between realism and abstraction, an upcoming art exhibition at Laramie County Community College will reveal intricate details that transform familiar cityscapes and landscapes into dynamic visual experiences.

The exhibition featuring an array of works spanning a decade by Denver artist Andrew Woodward, who explores contemporary realism focusing on cityscapes, landscapes and florals, will be on display in the Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery through Nov. 1. The gallery is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and is located on the Cheyenne campus adjoining the Surbrugg Prentice Auditorium. A reception is set for 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the gallery, followed by an artist talk from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Surbrugg Prentice Auditorium.

Along with the public events, Wooward will take part in workshops with local high school students called “Art Intensive.” Woodward said formative experiences as a high school student helped him understand how to pursue his calling as an artist.

“I've always enjoyed interacting with younger people and sharing experiences and expertise,” he said. “Young minds can have ideas that adults box themselves out of, and I like helping them understand how the art world works and what it takes to be dedicated to their craft.”

Rooted in contemporary realism, Woodward’s work often transcends straightforward representation. His paintings explore light and shadow in both natural and urban environments, blending intricate details with broader atmospheric perspectives.

Compared by some to photographs, his paintings are far from photorealism, Woodward said. Up close, abstract patterns emerge, while from a distance, details form unified images.

“For me, it's the atmosphere and the essence of the light as it transcends through space onto the subject matter,” he said. “It's about intimacy, too — the closer you get, the more abstract it becomes. But when you step back, all the details tie together to create these luminous paintings. You see the human hand in all those little imperfections, and that’s what makes it special.”

Showcased in solo and group exhibitions at prominent galleries across the U.S. and featured in prestigious art festivals, Woodward’s work continues to gain recognition. His recent opening of Woodward Studios in Denver provides a community-centered space for art and design. Educated at Kenyon College, with additional studies at Syracuse University’s Florence campus.
