Scholarships to be awarded at PUMA Steel during SteelDays event

Photo of a student welding at Puma SteelCHEYENNE, Wyoming – In celebration of the U.S. structural steel industry, the community is invited to visit, tour and interact with PUMA Steel in Cheyenne as it hosts a SteelDays event on Oct. 18.

Championed by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), along with its members and partners, SteelDays is the structural steel industry’s largest educational and networking function. Each year, SteelDays offers free events to showcase how the industry contributes to building America.

PUMA Steel will host a welding competition for high school students at its facility located at 1720 Pacific Ave. in Cheyenne. The event is free of charge and begins at 10 a.m.  Competitors, selected the day before during a separate welding competition at Laramie County Community College, will have been competing for several hours before the scholarship presentations, speeches and information sharing.  This year we will award 30 scholarships including three 1st place scholarships in the amount of $4,000 and a $1,000 welding machine.  Scholarships can be used at area welding training programs.  The scholarships and additional prizes are provided through the generous support of businesses and industry throughout the Rocky Mountain and adjacent regions. They reflect the growing demand for trained welders to fill well-paying, highly skilled jobs in all kinds of construction.
