Paintings that capture still moments of natural beauty coming to LCCC

Artwork by Conner Choi of a mountain landscape with waterCHEYENNE, Wyoming – Capturing the quiet beauty of natural landscapes and intimate moments, an upcoming art exhibition at Laramie County Community College will immerse viewers in the soulful reflections of artist Conner Choi’s paintings.

“Still Moments,” an exhibition featuring Choi’s contemplative and earnest paintings, predominantly in oil and gouache, will be on display from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 6-Dec. 13 in the Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery on LCCC’s Cheyenne campus. A reception with the artist is set from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 15 in the gallery and adjoining lobby with an artist talk to follow from 2-3 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Surbrugg/Prentice Auditorium. The programming is free and open to the public.

Choi is a Korean American painter and muralist based in Denver. His work primarily features landscapes, botanicals and culturally-focused figurative paintings with conceptual elements. Choi’s painting, he said, can be thought of as a reflection or conversation with the object he’s portraying rather than attempting to create a literal visual translation. In part by painting many of the pieces on location with his subjects, Choi said he can capture moments that transcend visual representation.

“Painting allows me the luxury of being present with myself as a part of the natural world and the opportunity to express the beauty and feeling I experience,” he said. “My goal is to present you, the viewer, with the spirit of a place and time.”

The emphasis in “Still Moments” will be on landscapes and local scenes from Colorado and Utah, with compositions that capture the serenity and spirit of each location.

First learning gouache painting while a student at the Watts Atelier of the Arts in San Diego, California, Choi said he hopes art lovers will come see the uniqueness of the colors in his niche approach to painting. Choi’s careful choice of materials reflects his commitment to practices that are safe for health and the environment.
