LCCC recreation center grand opening set for Oct. 17

A grand opening celebration is set for 4 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Blue RAC’s new competition gym. The building is located on the west end of campus near the soccer fields. LCCC President Dr. Joe Schaffer, Athletic Director Mark Puev and distinguished guests will make comments and welcome visitors to see the renovated facilities.

While the building’s footprint on LCCC’s Cheyenne campus will remain the same, students and the public will enjoy an entirely new experience in the Blue RAC. The facility, built in 1971, is one of the oldest buildings on campus, seeing only minor improvements and structural updates in the last half-century.

Now a state-of-the-art facility with modern amenities, visitors to the Blue RAC will notice the following improvements:

  • The multi-purpose room has been converted into a competition gym with seating for 1,100+ spectators, with the ceiling height increased to meet NJCAA requirements.
  • A two-story structure has been added, providing offices, locker rooms and a weight training room.
  • Club-level seating is now available for competitions and events.
  • Expanded fitness spaces, including areas for weight and cardio equipment, fitness classes and classrooms, are included.
  • Concessions area and reception/ticketing counter were added.
  • Electrical and HVAC systems received significant upgrades.

The updated facility is more than just an amenity for the college and Laramie County at large, Puev said. The Blue RAC, he said, will have a lasting impact on the quality of life and economy.

“Whether it’s for LCCC athletics, commencement or any other community event that will take place at the Blue RAC, we know the return on investment in this facility will be clear as we see the enjoyment and growth it brings to our corner of Wyoming,” Puev said. “We hope our community members will join us to get a first look at the incredible work that’s been done, get excited about Golden Eagle athletics and all the great things that will come as a result of this project.”

The renovation and expansion was a $20 million project funded with $10 million in capital construction support from the Wyoming Legislature, matched by the College. LCCC provided $6 million through the allocation of current student fees, $1 million from reserves and the LCCC Foundation contributed the remaining $3 million in private gift support.

“We could not have completed this project without the generous support of community stakeholders, and their contributions will be remembered in the lasting impact this facility will have in Cheyenne and Laramie County,” Puev said. “Our sincere gratitude is due to those who believed in this initiative.”
