LCCC to host free film viewing and diversity panel discussion

CHEYENNE, WYO. – Laramie County Community College Guided Pathways as part of the Strategies for Success course, is working to increase the conversation regarding diversity among its students and within our community. 

On Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m., LCCC will host a free public viewing of the movie “Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored,” followed by a diversity panel discussion at 5 p.m. Panel members will include Dr. Nish Goicolea, Zeke Sorenson, and Ezras Tellalian. The viewing and panel discussion will be held in the Clay Pathfinder Building, ANB Bank Leadership Center on the LCCC campus. 

“Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored,” is adapted from Clifton L. Taulbert's 1989 memoir about growing up in a racially segregated town in Mississippi; the movie covers the period between 1946 and 1962 — not the center of America's race revolution but the tense calm before the storm. “We feel these are important historical conversations for our students and community to engage in and enhances the lessons and message in “Who Owns the Icehouse,” a required textbook for LCCC Pathway’s, Strategies for Success course,” stated Carole Boughton, business & accounting pathway coordinator. 

All entering freshman are required to take the Strategies for Success course, providing opportunities for college preparedness, career exploration and discussions around social topics. 

Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored, is rated PG for thematic elements including mild violence, language and sensuality. This film depicts real-life historical events that may be triggering for some audiences.
