LCCC confirms nine new active COVID-19 cases among its students

CHEYENNE, WYOMING – Following extensive testing of students in the residence halls, Laramie County Community College confirmed nine new active student cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of active cases at LCCC to 11. 

In cooperation with the Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department, the college has placed 32 students in quarantine both on and off campus.  

After two positive cases were confirmed on Sept. 3, college officials immediately began the process of testing all students in the residence halls. Next week, officials will test these students again.  

Currently, there are no active employee cases, but two employees are quarantining based on the guidance provided by the Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department.  

According to LCCC President Dr. Joe Schaffer, the college continues to follow the outlined protocols to address active and quarantine cases.  

“We are committed to three guiding principles as we address these situations,” he said. “First, test broadly and frequently; second, identify and isolate active cases quickly, and third, follow our protocols.”

Of the positive cases, Schaffer added that only two have shown any symptoms of the virus. 

This semester, a significant majority of students are taking classes online, either fully or in part, which is helping to further minimize the spread of the virus. As a result of the increase in active cases, LCCC will engage in intensive cleaning of designated areas and will continue to test proactively.  

“Our current responses have proven our protocols work,” Schaffer said. “If we continue to quickly identify infected individuals, isolate them and care for them, we can continue our fall semester safely and effectively.”
