Roybell Baez named new assistant coach for LCCC men’s basketball

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Interim head coach for LCCC men's basketball DeWayne Saulsberry has filled his own coaching staff vacancy. Saulsberry announced this week that Roybell Baez will serve as the interim men's assistant coach for Golden Eagle basketball.

Baez comes to LCCC from Western Nebraska Community College where he served as an assistant coach with men’s basketball for four years.

While at WNCC, he helped with all aspects of recruiting, which is one of key reasons Saulsberry added him to the coaching staff. Baez also organized the community service for the WNCC program and maintained its social media presence. Baez was a part of that school’s first Region IX title in 17 years and helped move nine student athletes onto four year institutions.

“I'm excited to get to know Laramie County." Baez said. “And by focusing on academics and community service in addition to producing success on the basketball court, I really feel it will help the team reach a new level."

According to Saulsberry, Baez provides significant energy to the Golden Eagles program. “He brings in a winning attitude that our program needs," Saulsberry said.

During his time at WNCC, Baez was part of the coaching staff that earned the team a bid in the national tournament.

As a student, Baez played basketball at Dakota College at Bottineau in North Dakota. He completed his playing career and obtained his bachelor’s degree at Dickinson State University, also in North Dakota.

"Roybell is a good fit for our athletic department,” said Dr. Cindy Henning, the interim athletic director at LCCC. “Having been a student-athlete himself, he can relate to the balance needed for our team. He’ll be a great asset to our department, our college and our community."

Baez will start with LCCC on April 27.
