LCCC receives grant funding to further develop apprenticeship trainings

CHEYENNE, WYOMING – New apprenticeship opportunities for students and the business community are coming to Laramie County Community College.

LCCC was awarded an Expanding Community College Apprenticeships grant from the American Association of Community Colleges to create new registered apprenticeship opportunities in southeast Wyoming.          

Directed by the American Association of Community Colleges, the Expanding Community College Apprenticeships (ECCA) is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor to increase the number of apprentice programs and services throughout the nation. 

LCCC, the only Wyoming college included in this grant, received $140,000 in funding for the next three years for the apprenticeship program. LCCC identified three high-need apprenticeship areas for priority development:

  • Plumbing
  • HVAC
  • Advanced Manufacturing

The focus of the award is to establish the curriculum, infrastructure and systems at LCCC, and serve as the primary liaison between industry, the Wyoming Office of Apprenticeships, and the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services. 

Opportunities for financial aid to students may be available.

“We're now able to build on an already successful program in our state,” said Maryellen Tast, the dean of the School of Outreach & Workforce Development at LCCC. “This is a wonderful opportunity to build on those best practices and to address industries that haven't been included before.”

Additionally, LCCC will participate in a number of planned apprenticeship events in November:

  • Apprenticeship Week Proclamation Signing: 1:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4, Kendrick Gallery
  • Apprenticeship Hiring Event: 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, Cheyenne Workforce Center 
  • Educating Employers on the Benefits of Apprenticeship Training: 11:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, Laramie County Library (registration required)

The AACC ECCA program is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor to increase the number of programs and services at over 50 colleges throughout the nation. The project expects to train 16,000 apprentices over a three-year period.
