LCCC and Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne partner to bring new opportunities for Cheyenne teens

CHEYENNE, WYO. — Thanks to a new community partnership, opportunities for high school students to find success have increased significantly.

Laramie County Community College and the Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne have entered into a new partnership to bring more career development opportunities for Cheyenne teens. Beginning Feb. 15, the BGCC senior high youth program will be located on the LCCC campus in the Center for Conferences & Institutes, Room 142.

In addition to the many existing BGCC programs and activities focused on academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles, staff and participants will partner with LCCC's GEAR UP program to offer career exploration and coaching to Cheyenne teens. Participants will experience hands-on educational activities from the various certified and associate degree programs offered at LCCC, visit with industry employers, and participate in simulation activities to prepare them for future careers.

"This is an exciting time for the Boys & Girls Club to embark on a partnership that will provide a world-class club experience for our teens," said Dustin McKen, board president of BGCC. "There are only a handful of these clubs operating on higher education campuses, and this will be a one-of-a-kind integrated experience for the teens."

Duvale Brown will serve as the unit director for the LCCC site. Senior high students are able to ride club buses to the LCCC site after school. Annual membership fee for the LCCC site continues to be $10 per calendar year with GEAR UP participants offered a joint club membership.

"We're thrilled to partner with the Boys & Girls Club, giving these students a chance to be immersed in the college experience on campus and provide a clear pathway to pursuing higher education," said Dr. Joe Schaffer, president of LCCC.

The BGCC main site will continue operations at 515 West Jefferson Road for those six years old through junior high.
