Speech Team finishes regular season in persuasive style
The talents of the Laramie County Community College speech team were on display all
season long, and the group will now have an opportunity to showcase its verbal skills
at this year’s national tournament.
The semester kicked off with an event held at LCCC in late January. Twelve universities and colleges competed, and LCCC’s Meghan O’Brien finished fifth in persuasive speaking.
The team traveled to Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., in February, where Courtney Wood placed sixth in poetry; Louis Uribe placed fourth in impromptu speaking; and O’Brien placed fifth in persuasive speaking.
On the second day of that tournament, Uribe placed second in extemporaneous speaking and second in impromptu speaking. O’Brien placed fifth in persuasive speaking.
At the final tournament of the season in Phoenix, Ariz., the team competed at the District 9 Tournament hosted by Glendale Community College, competing against a variety of four-year and two-year schools. At that event, Wood placed third in poetry interpretation; O’Brien took fourth in persuasive speaking; Uribe placed fifth in impromptu speaking; and Tia Fitzgerald took two honors, placing fourth in informative speaking and fifth in program oral interpretation.
On the second day of the tournament, Wood took second in poetry interpretation; O’Brien placed third in persuasive speaking; Fitzgerald took sixth in program oral interpretation; and Uribe placed sixth in extemporaneous speaking.
Overall, the LCCC team placed third on day one of the event, and Uribe was named District Tournament Champion in impromptu speaking.
