Speech team sends six to national competition

Mark Schaad and Dominic Syracuse were named District Champions in Duo Interpretation at the Region IX Tournament.
The LCCC speech team had a very successful weekend in Colorado Springs at the District IX Tournament, which is connected to the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament (NIET). This tournament is typically attended by four-year colleges and universities. The district includes schools from Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and the University of Texas El-Paso. LCCC will be the only community college from district IX represented at the NIET.

In the District IX Tournament, Brittney Thaler placed third in Extemporaneous Speaking; Conroy Stout placed fourth in Persuasive Speaking and fourth in Dramatic Interpretation; Weston Fitzgerald placed third in Persuasive Speaking and fourth in Impromptu Speaking; Dominic Syracuse placed fourth in After Dinner Speaking and fourth in Program Oral Interpretation; Mark Schaad and Syracuse were named District Champions in Duo Interpretation. These finishes qualified these competitors for the national tournament in their events.

In addition, Timmarie Bowie placed fourth in Informative Speaking and is the first alternate to attend the NIET.
Other top-10 finishes include: Stout, Impromptu Speaking; Thaler, Dramatic Interpretation; Syracuse, Extemporaneous Speaking; Bowie, Prose Interpretation; Kirsten Ryel, Program Oral Interpretation and Extemporaneous Speaking.
Nationals will be held at the University of Wisconsin, Eau-Claire, April 1-4.
