The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team got 26 points from sophomore Deon Edwin in their home stand against Northeast Junior College Saturday, Jan. 25, but that was not enough. The Golden Eagles dropped their third in a row to the No. 23 team in the country, 93-81.
The Plainsmen went to the free-throw line 51 times and converted on 44 of those. The Golden Eagles were 23-33 from the line.
Early on, both teams traded baskets, but the Plainsmen went on a run led by Odessa Lear, who finished with a team-high 19 points. Northeastern went into the half with an 11-point lead (43-32).
The Golden Eagles picked up the intensity in the start of the second half and chipped away at the lead, cutting it down to as close as four. The Plainsmen’s Jamal Peterson answered with a three-pointer to slow the momentum.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded 51 to 40 and gave up 18 offensive rebounds. The lone player in double figures was Bronson Moton of the Plainsmen, who finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
All-American Deshon Portley finished with 19 points on the evening. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 37.9 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from three-point land and 69.7 percent from the free-throw line.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 14-9 on the year and 5-5 in South Sub-Region play. The Golden Eagles look to snap their three-game losing streak on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Torrington, Wyo., for a matchup with Eastern Wyoming College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

Golden Eagles fall to Lamar in South Sub-Region Action
It was not the result that the Golden Eagles of Laramie County Community College (14-8) were hoping for on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The Golden Eagles held a 42-39 lead at the half, but they gave that lead up in the second half as Lamar Community College knocked down seven second-half three-pointers to give the Runnin’ Lopes an 86-84 victory.
The Golden Eagles got off to a magnificent start early in the first half with a 7-0 run that gave them a 16-5 lead with 14.43 remaining in the first half. The Runnin’ Lopes of Lamar Community College had a 10-0 run of their own to get within two of the Golden Eagles over a two-minute span.
The Runnin’ Lopes got their first lead of the game with 8:09 remaining in the first half on a lay-in by Theo Brown. The Golden Eagles answered and regained the lead as sophomore Deon Edwin knocked down two threes before halftime to give the Golden Eagles a 42-39 lead at the intermission. Sophomore Kendyl Grover established a presence in the first half with 10 points and six blocks.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles opened up a lead as big as eight, but the Runnin’ Lopes would not go away and kept chipping at the lead. The Runnin’ Lopes regained the lead with 9:30 remaining in the ballgame. That lead didn’t last long, as sophomore Deshon Portley made a couple of trips to the free-throw line to give the Golden Eagles a 78-76 lead with 4:45 remaining.
Freshman Bayek Tutlan knocked down two of his nine three-pointers with a little under a 1:30 left to tie things up at 84-84. The Running Lopes sunk a basket with 9.3 seconds remaining to take the lead that eventually amounted to the victory. Freshman Spencer Svejcar had a good look at the basket for the Golden Eagles, but his shot did not fall.
Tutlan led all scorers with 27 points, all coming from the three-point line. Edwin led the way for the Golden Eagles with 26 points. Grover finished the game with a career-high nine blocks on the evening along with 18 points and six rebounds.
