Laramie County Community College is pleased to announce Dr. Jose Fierro as the new Vice President of Academic Affairs. He will officially start at LCCC on Monday, Feb. 18.
“I am excited about Jose’s background,” says LCCC President Dr. Joe Schaffer. “He will help the College move forward and tackle some of the major challenges we are facing.” Dr. Schaffer adds that among the college’s current goals are improving student success in developmental and college-level math; strengthening and expanding distance learning opportunities; and improving science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricula. Dr. Fierro has experience in each of these areas and will be able to move the college forward in these and other objectives, Dr. Schaffer says.
“The community and the campus are in for a treat when Dr. Fierro joins us here at LCCC,” Dr. Shaffer says. “His energy is contagious.”
Dr. Fierro comes to LCCC from Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Open Campus, where he was an academic dean. At Florida State College, he also served as the Director for the Center for eLearning, which is the unit that develops college-wide curriculum for online, hybrid and web-enhanced programs. Dr. Fierro also was charged with overseeing the production schedule for course development funded by multi-million dollar grants from the Department of Labor and the Department of Education, and he was the co-principal investigator for a National Science Foundation grant. He was responsible for providing learner support services and faculty support for approximately 40,000 students and 250 faculty members per year.
“I am honored to have been selected,” Dr. Fierro says. “I'm excited to become a member of your community and begin learning the specifics of LCCC's processes. I have already seen evidence of the friendly and close-knit nature of your community; this makes me eager to see what will be produced as the result of our collaborative efforts! I look forward to joining the LCCC team and being a part of your vision, accomplishments and results.”
Dr. Fierro has extensive instructional experience in both the traditional face-to-face and online environments, having taught undergraduate courses in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Public Health and Research Methods, as well as graduate courses in Organizational Behavior. He has developed several online and hybrid courses in the natural sciences. He also has authored a number of journal articles and has presented at multiple educational conferences on the topic of faculty development for online teaching and the institutional strategies necessary for online programs to succeed. Dr. Fierro’s research interests include improving student retention in developmental education, social learning, and the effective use of emerging technologies in the classroom.
Dr. Fierro received his Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University and a Master of Science in Management and Administration of Educational Programs from Nova Southeastern University. He also holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas y Ambientales in Bogotá, Colombia. He is fluent in the languages of English and Spanish.
In his spare time, Dr. Fierro enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling, and engaging in physical activities such as running, sport cycling and competing in triathlons.
“The vice president search committee brought three excellent candidates to the campus,” Dr. Schaffer says. “They all brought strengths and attributes that would serve the College well. In the end though, Dr. Fierro’s passion for higher education, focus on the community and students, and track record for producing results made him the natural fit for where LCCC is going.”
