Golden Eagles basketball players win Region IX honors

CHEYENNE, WYO. –  Following a strong team showing this season, the Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team has received individual honors for their work on the court.

Sophomore guard Spencer Svejcar was named to the All-Region IX First Team and sophomore guard Darien Fernandez was selected for All-Region IX Second Team.  The pair led the Golden Eagles to a 22-10 overall record (11-5 in Region IX South games).

Svejcar led LCCC in scoring with 16.1 points per game, shooting 41 percent from three-point range. Fernandez followed closely with 16.0 points per game, and he led LCCC in assists with 4. 8 per game. Fernandez also finished the season with 107 steals, an average of 3.3 per game, which places him third this season in the NJCAA.

For his efforts in the tournament, Fernandez was named to the Region IX All-Tournament Team. In the team’s opening round victory over Trinidad State, Fernandez nearly recorded a triple-double with 11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in addition to five steals. In the Eagles’ quarterfinal loss to Gillette, he led the team with 18 points and added five rebounds.
