LCCC Golden Eagles defeated Trinidad 93-81 during the first round of the
The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles men’s basketball team outrebounded the Trojans from Trinidad State Junior College 46-34 on Saturday night for a 93-81 victory in the first round of the Region IX playoffs. The Eagles now advance to the quarterfinals of the Region IX Tournament, which will take place at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5. The Golden Eagles will square off against Gillette College in that game.
In Saturday night’s matchup against Trinidad State, the Golden Eagles never trailed and were sparked in the opening minutes by sophomore Kamari Robinson, who scored nine of the Golden Eagles’ first 15 points. A 16-5 run pushed the Golden Eagle lead to as high as 12 in the first half. The Trojans cut that lead to two with 6:03 remaining in the first half. Coming out of a timeout, the Golden Eagles answered by forcing two straight Trojan turnovers and converting on both to take a 42-31 lead into halftime.
Robinson finished the first half with 16 points. Trojan Joe Smith kept his team in the first half with 19 points in the first half, including three three-pointers.
The Golden Eagles extended the lead in the second half to as high as 15 and forced the Trojans into 16 turnovers. Five Golden Eagles scored in double figures, highlighted by freshman Alexis Dargenton, who had 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kamari Robinson and Spencer Svejcar finished with 22 points each. Darien Fernandez dished out nine assists and chipped in with 11 points. Sophomore Treyven Gallegos came off the bench and scored 13 points.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from the three-point line and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line. The Trojans were held to just six three-pointers after hitting 17 in their previous game against Lamar.
