The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 86-67 win Wednesday night over the North Platte Community College Knights at the LCCC Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles, who had suffered a loss in the first meeting with the Knights, came out rolling in this matchup.
The Golden Eagles got a strong performance from sophomore Kamari Robinson, who finished with 26 points on the evening, going 11 of 11 from the field and two for two from the three-point line. Trailing in the first five minutes of the game, Robinson knocked down a three-pointer that ended a 7-0 run by the Knights. A Knights turnover leading to a Tyson Kansayo lay-in gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game a little over five minutes after the opening basket.
The Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 16-7 run to take a 42-33 lead into the half.
The second half was all controlled by the Golden Eagles as they ran away with the game. Set up by three consecutive dunks – the first coming from Kanseyo, who leaped over a Knight and flushed a put-back dunk off a missed shot. Treyven Gallegos and Alexis Dargenton followed that with dunks of their own in transition.
Sophomore Darien Fernandez, who sits fourth in the country in steals, finished with 19 points, eight assists and two steals. Sophomore Spencer Svejcar chipped in with 14 points. The Golden Eagles shut down Cameron Williams, who finished the game with only three points. Williams came into the game averaging 22.4 points per game – the 11th best average in the county. The Knights were led by Matt Thomas, who had 24 points. Thomas had 18 of those points from behind the arch.
The win gives the Golden Eagles their 20th victory of the year, for a 20-9 record and 10-5 in the South-Sub Region. They close out the regular season this Saturday as they host McCook Community College at the LCCC Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on Charter Channel 191, www.njcaatv.com and Wingspan Online.
