LCCC Volleyball sweeps at Wyo-Braska
The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles volleyball team had a very impressive weekend – they took all four of their matches at the Wyo-Braska Tournament. LCCC defeated Seward County Community College, Northeast Community College, Trinidad State Junior College and McCook Community College.
Friday, the Golden Eagles met a Seward County team that was very tough. Freshman Preston Lienemann led the squad with 14 kills in the match, and sophomore MiKayla Martinez had 13 kills. LCCC defeated Seward in four sets (17-25, 27-25, 25-23 and 26-24).
Later in the afternoon, the Golden Eagles met up with NJCAA DII #17 Northeast Community College and got the victory in a difficult four sets (25-21, 25-20, 20-25 and 27-25). Freshman Suzie Rhodes had 36 assists in the match. Lienemann had 14 kills, and freshman Kiley Ridgway also had 14.
The Golden Eagles were back in action on day two of the Wyo-Braska and put away Trinidad State Junior College in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-18). Freshman Tori Passarelli had three serve aces, and Lienemann had 12 kills to lead the team.
The Golden Eagles closed out the weekend with a victory over McCook Community College in straight sets (25-13, 25-21 and 25-19). Sophomore Breanne Hankins had 9 digs in the match, and Lienemann continued to show her dominance with 16 kills in the match. The Golden Eagles are now 14-5 on the year. They are on the road Tuesday as they travel to face McCook Community College in McCook, Nebraska.
Men’s soccer splits matches over weekend
Laramie County Community College men’s soccer team had a tough test over the weekend and split its games. Friday, the Golden Eagles fell to Northwest College 3-1, but they rebounded on Saturday by defeating Sheridan College 4-3.
Friday’s match was an open game with both teams creating good looks at goal. LCCC struck first on a counter-attack in the 26th minute when freshman Alex Espinoza crossed a ball to freshman Tristan White, who tapped in his shot. The score at the half was 1-0.
The Golden Eagles self-destructed in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Northwest answered with three goals in a 10-minute span. The first came in the 47th minute as Mitchell Pinney followed up on a rebound. The second goal came in the 54th minute when Eddie Asamoah finished a cross. Pinney got the third goal off a penalty kick in the 57th minute. LCCC knocked on the door but wasn’t able to break through. The final score was 3-1.
Saturday, the Golden Eagles responded with a match against Sheridan College. Freshman Samuel Franceschi got his first goal of the year in the 30th minute as he followed up on a deflected free kick to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Sheridan leveled the game in the 34th minute as Carlos Garcia converted on a penalty kick. LCCC answered in the 39th minute when Jordan Garcia finished a cross from freshman Caleb Rondon. LCCC held a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Generals tied it up again in the 55th minute off a free kick from Chris Rinn. Sophomore captain Mario Garcia regained the lead for the Golden Eagles in the 68th minute on a penalty kick. Sheridan answered once again as Garcia got his second goal in the 70th minute. Sophomore Aidan Stout knocked in the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute when a Jordan Garcia cross found Stout, who brought the ball down from his chest and buried his shot in the upper corner of the goal to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 win.
The men’s side is now 4-4 on year and 2-1 in Region IX North. Up next is a home match (which will be played at Cheyenne South High School) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, against Northeastern Junior College.
