Intensive ESL program at LCCC
The intensive ESL program at LCCC not only prepares students for general studies at the collegiate level, but it also helps students acquire the necessary skills to take college-level courses more rapidly due to the intensive amount of hours students spend in the class each week while studying and becoming proficient in:
- American Culture
The intensive ESL program at LCCC has four levels that meet in eight-week sessions. Students spend 20 hours per week in class studying English and are expected to complete two to three hours of English homework every night. ESL students are also encouraged to participate in campus activities to meet other students and learn more about college life in the U.S.
Upon arrival at LCCC, non-native speakers will take a placement test to determine their level of English proficiency. Students will enroll in the following courses, at the appropriate level, once the placement test has been completed:
- Oral Communication (Listening/Speaking)
- Reading and Writing
- Grammar and Spelling
- American Culture
Once students have successfully completed Level 2 and American Culture, they will be able to start taking courses at LCCC that lead to graduation. The first class students will take is Introduction to College Success: First Year Seminar (COLS 1000); a course designed to help all college students learn how to be successful.
Students who successfully complete Level 4 of the ESL program will be permitted to enroll in Freshman Composition with a supplemental course (ENGL 0910/1010) without being required to take another placement test. Once students are able to enroll in ENGL 0910/1010, they will exit the ESL program and be able to take other college-level classes that count toward graduation. Students can visit the Academic Programs Web page to learn more about the programs that are available at LCCC.
